The Singer Complex

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2 NIV)

How often have you heard that voice that simply blows you away?

I mean you’re just sitting there waiting to be wowed and a sound reaches your ear that touches you to your core. It’s not just the voice… it’s the message which you hear more clearly with every note of the song. If you have had an experience like this before, then you more than likely will be familiar with the type of person I’m about to discuss with you.

You see, over the years I have noticed that rarely have I continued to be blown away by local gospel singers after they begin to gather a bit of fame. Their music still sounds amazing… don’t get me wrong, but the message is gone. I’ve started to call it the singer complex. It sounds like a disease or a disorder, I’m aware of that, and in truth that’s exactly what it is. With each compliment, every “You blessed my heart,” the “WOWs”, the “You have an amazing voice(s)”, a little more pride creeps in until there is no more space for God. And without God how can there be a message that touches you?

Contrary to the name however this “disease”, doesn’t only affect singers. It has been caught by many pastors, programme planners, actors and many others of the gifted community. [As we all have gifts, we are all susceptible to this disease.] I must confess that I have often caught it myself. It’s like the flu…it never really goes away. It just waits until your immune system it down then, BAM!! it jumps out at you like shark out of water.

Like those singers whose message we no longer feel, we become so filled with pride that God has no space in our lives. As Solomon says, pride brings disgrace but humility brings wisdom. True wisdom comes only from having God in our lives. So as we minister to others ” in the name of Jesus”, let’s make sure we actually have Jesus in our hearts. We all, and I mean all, must examine our lives, and put away pride so God can use us to lead others to him.

Check in with the Great Physician and allow him to heal you from your Complex. With prayer and supplication let’s come back to him and allow him to empty us of self and fill us with his Spirit. Our prayer should be, “Lord give me a heart like thine.”

P.S. Show-off bring disgrace.

New Age Christians

“If the Lord never changes as the fashions of men, If he’s always the same why he is old fashioned then, But the call me old fashioned when I dear to say that I like it far better in the old fashioned way.”

Have you noticed that Christians nowadays appear no different from the people of the world. It was my belief that once changed … well you are changed, different. A christian under any circumstances should be easily recognizable as a Christian. Think about… how am I a christian if I look like the rest of the world? And don’t even try that crap about man looks at the outside and God looks at the heart; how can you witness then? Clearly people cannot, can absolutely not see your heart. Foolishness.

Christians nowadays appear more painted than clowns, wear higher heels and tighter, shorter skirts than strippers and tighter pants than gays. I would hasten to mention that they don’t even know the doctrines they claim to believe and would it be wrong to say that it appears there is more sin inside the church than outside of it.

Check out this poem I wrote on this new age Christianity:

A Perspective On Christianity

All: This is our Life,

This is the world we see,

This is how it is,

But not how it’s meant to be.

This is our worship,

Our Praise to our King,

This is our belief,

This! Is why we sing.

Young Female: This is all I know,

This I came and saw,

This was there at birth,

This I learnt as Law.

Older Female: This is for the respect,

This for the position I hold,

This is for who my husband is,

Yet my heart is cold.

Old Man: This is how it is now,

This I did not know,

This is what it’s become,

This makes me want to go.

Middle Aged Male: This because I’m holy,

This for my self-righteousness,

This for my mind, not my heart,

This not a measure of faithfulness.

Young Man: This is just formality,

This is, because I must,

Yet this is not so bad,

For This still feeds my lust.

Young Adults: This is a commandment,

This is for a crown,

This has no interest,

This causes us to frown.

Older Female: This is for the fancy hats,

The expensive suits I buy,

This is for a choir seat,

This is my lie.

This is once a week,

Just one day of pretend,

This only the 7th, leaving 6,

Which in vanity I spend.

Old man: This was my first love,

This, it saved my life,

This gave me hope,

Though it lent me strife.

Child: This all, It confuses me,

But Mommy says I must,

And Pastor says if I don’t,

I’ll end up with the unjust.

Child: I don’t know what this means yet,

This is for their sake,

This I do not care about,

This is why I fake.

Young Woman: This is empty for me,

The songs just float right thru,

The scriptures, yeah I read them,

But I Don’t care, {turns to young man} Do you?

Young Man: {to young lady} This is just for show, love,

{Flirtatiously} And you would know that best,

And I know I’m an awesome singer,

So who cares about the rest?

Young Adults: This sees what it wants to,

This has adjustable rules,

This adjusts to my education level,

Even in their own schools.

Middle-Aged Male: This not about the family,

They have to find This on their own,

This because I’ve have baptised so many,

Look how This has grown.

I don’t care about the heart,

Or how repentive it is,

I only care about the number I led,

To call themselves his.

Old man: This is not the way,

This has gone so wrong,

This can only mean,

This won’t last for long.

Old Man: This is what it has become,

This, it breaks my heart,

This needs to get back,

To where it was at the start.

Child: {to old man} This is not right?

But this is all I know,

How can there be more to this,

How can that be so?

Old Man: This is not just a pretend game,

This is about God and you,

This is about your salvation,

So be careful what you do.

Old man: This is about love child,

This is not about empty praise,

This is about really loving him,

Not just for the eternal days.

All: This is not what this is now,

This is about salvation’s plan,

This is about the saving,

Of fallen man.

This has got to change now!

This is messed up bad!

If this does not repent,

This will turn out sad.

What kind of Christian are you? Make sure you know where you stand with God.
